Napier Museum was established by the ruler of Travancore in 1855. It features Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian styles of architecture. A natural air conditioning system keeps the museum pleasant in any weather.
The museum houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot, ivory carvings and life-size Kathakali figures in full array. The figurines preserve here amply illustrate the varying features of South-Indian sculpture from the 8th to 18th century.
Napier Museum forms part of the attractions within the Museum premises at Thiruvananthapuram such as the Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Thiruvananthapuram Zoo and Natural History Museum.

Chitra Art Gallery

Located near the Napier Museum, the Sree Chitra Art Gallery was established in 1935. The gallery has a good collection of miniature paintings from the Mughal and Rajasthani schools, Roerich paintings, paintings from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali, and copies of murals. The century-old world famous paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, who pioneered the art of oil painting, is a star attraction of the gallery. Four hundred year old Thanjavur paintings are also on display at the gallery.
The gallery is open from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs and on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 17:00 hrs. The gallery is closed on Mondays

The Kerala State Science and Technology Museum

The Kerala State Science and Technology Museum is situated close to the Napier museum in Thiruvananthapuram. The exhibits relate to science, technology and electronics. The museum is of good educational value for the students of science and technology. The primary aim of the Science and Technology Museum is to instil a scientific temper and awareness among the common men.
A planetarium is attached to the museum, providing complete knowledge about the solar system. It also conducts 40-minute science-related show in English at noon daily. The museum is open every day from 10 00 to 17 00 hrs and closed on Mondays.
Entry is restricted by tickets - Rs 10/- for adults and Rs 5/- for students and children.

The Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum, housed in a modern spacious building, is situated in the Napier Museum and Zoo complex. The museum has a varied and rich collection of minerals and books presented by General Cullen in 1885. The museum has separate galleries for mammals, birds, lower vertebrates, invertebrates, separate room for index collections, skeleton gallery, an ethnographic collection, and a laboratory. There is also an outdoor exhibit of fossil tree trunks near the entrance of the museum. The art collection covers aspects of Kerala's rich heritage in sculptures of stone, wood and metal. An interesting replica of Tharawad is also present in the museum

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo























The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala dates back to the mid-19th century. Founded by Maharaja Swati Thirunal of Travancore in 20 hectares, the zoo provides people from all over the country a chance to watch exotic animals. Conservation drives have earned this zoo the reputation of one of the most successful breeding centers for endangered species, especially, lions. Recently it gained fame of a different order as the key site of inspiration for the Booker Prize winning novel, The Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Latest modernization has enhanced its appeal with natural enclosures housing a wide array of animals. The precincts also abound in plant life, each clearly marked for the enthusiast. The Natural History Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery within the premises, have rare artifacts of cultural, historical and artistic significance.

The Kanakakunnu Palace is situated near the Napier Museum. This palace was used by the Travancore royal family to entertain their guests in the earlier days. The palace is now under government custody. The palace and the sprawling grounds are the venue for many cultural meets and programmes. A week long festival of Indian classical dances is held at the Nishagandhi open air theatre in the Kanakakunnu Palace compound. A food festival is also held at the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds

Nedunganda is a village located at Anchuthengu Panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. It is a beautiful beach side village. This residential area situated between Kaikkara and Vilabhagom on Kadakkavoor - Varkala Road.
